An Oak Bluffs man and business owner was arraigned last Friday in Edgartown district court on charges of rape and assault and battery after he allegedly sexually assaulted a women earlier this month on Central avenue in the Camp Ground.

Saurabh Chhibber, 29, owner of Island Authentics on Circuit avenue, pleaded not guilty to the charges and is now free on $2,000 bail.

According to court documents, Mr. Chhibber met the victim and several of her friends at a downtown bar on the evening of August 3. The two eventually separated from the group and took a walk through the Camp Ground, where Mr. Chhibber allegedly became aggressive and assaulted her.

The victim did not immediately report the incident to police, but came forward several days later after experiencing emotional problems and difficulties sleeping.

Mr. Chhibber is due back in court next month.
