Thank you to Mark Alan Lovewell for his superb writing regarding our Manning family home which was torn down on June 8. There will be two new modular homes arriving on July 8. One home will be for Paul, Theresa and Noah James Manning, and the other home will be my down-sized retirement abode. We are all grateful to keep the property in the Manning family and for the next generations to enjoy. In the meantime, I will look forward to frequent visits from my sisters Judith and Jyl.

Sincerest condolences to the family and hundreds of friends of Jena Pothier whose short life was so honored on Wednesday in a service that was attended by hundreds from across the Vineyard, her grandparents and family members from Barre, and her XAZ sorority sisters from Plymouth State College. Dave and Terry have been wonderful family friends over the years through our work together at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in radiology, our days of fund-raising and firemen’s ball with the Oak Bluffs Fire Department, our association at Cars Unlimited, cheering on the regional high school rowing team, and in so many areas of our lives we have intertwined over the past three decades. A very tragic ending for a wonderful, young, beautiful girl, Jena. At the graveside, we all looked to the sky where we saw a sun dog; a few moments later we all marveled at the miraculous rainbow colored circle around the sun. An awesome sight for an awesome Jena.

Get well wishes to Kelly McCarron as she recuperates at Massachusetts General Hospital. She has such a long haul ahead of her, and she needs our thoughts and prayers as well.

The Aquinnah Power Cruise will be held on Saturday, June 20 at Aquinnah Circle at noon. The Boston Area Roadsters Car Club and Friends will once again head to Aquinnah for an afternoon of viewing their specialty cars, custom cars and hot rods. Vineyard enthusiasts with their custom cars are invited to bring their specialty vehicles to the show as well. Admission is free to one and all. The public is invited to spend the afternoon at Aquinnah Circle, enjoy the shops at the Cliffs, and to view the Gravity Challenge. Gravity Distance Challengers are invited to dust off their gravity vehicles for the Moshup Hill downhill challenge which will be registering their vehicles to sign in at noon. See you there.

Congratulations to our recent Aquinnah graduates. Those graduating from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School included Thomas Fantasia, Alexa Fisher, Zoe Fisher, Dylan Hutchinson, Shelby Ives, Kayla Manning, Anastasia Sargent, Samuel Scott, and Michael Sellitti. Graduating from the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School was Evangeline “KoKo” Sanfilippo. And from Falmouth Academy were Hilary Smith and Taza Vercruysse. The best to one and all in their future endeavors.

Congratulations to Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) natural resource director Bret P. Stearns and environmental coordinator James Miller for their recent recognition at the State House on June 10 where they received an award for the toxic use reduction. Their program utilized non-lead fishing weights during the 2008 Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Participants were to return their comments on an enclosed card for statistical purposes. It was the beginning of removing toxins from our surrounding waters and in the fish we consume. The lead-free weights were purchased from a company in England and were the size of small stones. Tribal youth were also given the weights during the derby this spring.
