Veterans, merchant mariners and others involved in past and present service will be honored at the Nov. 21 Shabbat Service at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center. An Oneg Shabbat with refreshments will follow the service honoring veterans. The Island community is invited to the service.

As part of the service, Yahrzeit (memorial) candles will be lighted to pay homage to those who served, were killed in action, or have died since serving. Those who had loved ones serving in the present Iraq war or earlier wars will have an opportunity to note their loved ones’ service. Veterans and others who served are asked to bring a picture of themselves in uniform.

The Shabbat service will be led by Rabbi Caryn Broitman and begin at 5:30 p.m. Jo Ann Murphy, veterans agent for Dukes County will attend the service and be available to answer any veteran related questions. Officers and members of American Legion Post 257, from Vineyard Haven will participate.

Anyone attending may read a favorite appropriate reading. In addition, this will be an opportunity for all to pay their respects to loved ones who served our country.
