The Oak Bluffs police department this week announced the seventh annual Junior Police Academy will run from August 25 through August 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day in the community room of the Oak Bluffs School.

Academy director Sergeant Michael Marchand has opened the recruiting process for children ages 11 through 14 to participate in the structured four-day program; each day will concentrate on a different aspect of policing. “This is a great way to get your child motivated and organized for the new school year,” Sergeant Marchand said.

The program is free and is intended to increase self-esteem and respect for law enforcement by promoting the understanding of community policing, arrest procedures, medical emergencies, seat belt safety, defensive tactics and emergency vessel operation. In addition there are daily themes recruits will discuss, such as accountability, respect and self-esteem.

A variety of enrichment activities and daily field trips are also planned.

Interested participants must pick up an application packet at the Oak Bluffs police department at 1 Ocean avenue during regular business hours. The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17. For more information call 508-693-0750.
