A call for a fully engaged fire at Claudia jewelry store on Main street in Vineyard Haven Wednesday prompted a hasty response from firefighters following the Independence Day fire that destroyed the Caf Moxie restaurant and badly damaged the Bunch of Grapes bookstore in the same area.

But to everyone’s relief, the fire was relatively minor and was extinguished quickly.

Firefighters received the call around 1:30 p.m. Although the initial call was for a full departmental response, it quickly became clear the fire was not nearly as serious as the July 4 fire. Claudia is on the same block as Caf Moxie and Bunch of Grapes.

Fire chief John Schilling said the owner of the store initially reported flames shooting out of the base of a ceiling fan. When firefighters arrived, however, no flames were evident and there was only smoke. Firefighters shut off power, removed the fan and turned off the circuit, the chief said.

“The fan was a total loss, but the structure itself is fine,” he said.

Chief Schilling said firefighters do not take any calls for working fires lightly, but he agreed that the call of a fire in the heart of downtown Vineyard Haven these days creates an added sense of urgency.

“Everyone is a little sensitive to a call of a fire on Main street, especially considering recent events,” the chief said.
