Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, her husband Dan and their daughter Samantha returned home on Monday after attending the annual Mashpee Pow Wow over the weekend. Cheryl was honored as a dignitary in her capacity as an elected tribal officer. Congratulations to their daughter Samantha Maltais who won first prize in traditional dance.
Lizzie Berardi entertained her Vineyard family and friends at Dogfish Bar on Thursday evening with a surfcasting party at the sign of the flip-flops. It was enjoyed by one and all from across the Vineyard as well as from across the country.
On the Fourth of July, I missed the parade down Old South Road but heard it was another success. That evening I carefully followed the flags down Lighthouse Road and heard all of the festivities at one home along the way so I hopped over the locked fence, traipsed through the rosa rugosa, climbed the osprey pole, waded in the water at Lobsterville, and jogged up the wooden beach walk to be greeted by Lucas, who showed me his badge and asked to view my engraved invitation in return, which I obviously had lost while wading, and then suddenly found that I had landed on the front deck of the Batzers and was warmly welcomed by Max and Cheryl with a large glass of organic lemonade upon my arrival. Sometimes it is not always easy being a columnist in a small town, especially when it comes to social events and on occasion not getting an invitation, because it is always assumed that I carry a camera, notebook and pen with me. A grand time was had by all at this Fourth of July celebration, which is now entertaining the fourth generation of Lobsterville residents and friends.
Max and Cheryl Batzer and their sons Travis and Lucas are at their Lobsterville home for the summer season. Travis recently graduated with honors from Columbia Grammar and Prep School and will be attending McGill University. Lucas is presently working at Blackstone in Manhattan.
Eric and Sheryl Berke and their sons Aron and Jeremy of Toronto are enjoying the early summer season at their new home at Lobsterville. Aron will enter his sophomore year at Pamona College in Claremont, Calif., and Jeremy recently returned to Aquinnah after two weeks of ski training at Whistler’s Mountain in British Columbia.
Gary Foster and his daughter Daryn are at their East Pasture home for their summer sojourn and a break from the hills of Hollywood. Gary and I recently updated each other on our winter projects. Of course he reads of my escapades in my column each week which pales in comparison to his work as a movie producer, although I could furnish him with several chapters from my books of life to make a few documentaries to carry him into an early retirement. His latest movie is The Soloist, which will be released soon. He is completing work on When In Rome, which will be released within the year.
Lisa Foster has remained in Los Angeles where she is busy with her business, One Bag at a Time, which is growing rather rapidly. Her first customer on the Vineyard was Cronig’s Market, followed by the Chilmark Store. Lisa recently made her first trip to China to work on her business plans. In her absence this summer, all of her friends are still meeting at the Foster home for their weekly book club.
Daryn Foster is a student at Northeastern University and is spending as much time as possible on the Vineyard between classes. Kayla Foster is presently traveling in Israel and will return to Aquinnah at the end of July.
James M. Hakenson attended the Mashpee Pow Wow and came in third with the Alamoosic Drum. James is working at Plimoth Plantation for his second summer as an interpreter.
Mack Haskell and his wife Tricia have arrived from their winter home in Ponte Vedra for their summer season at Lobsterville. Devon, Claire, and Mack have been catching most of the striped bass at Lobsterville.
Millie and Connie Higgins of Beckley, West Va., are awaiting the arrival of their children and grandchildren for visits throughout the summer.
David and Diane Jensen and their son Dan were at their Aquinnah Circle home for the holiday weekend.
Dr. Marvin Kendrick, his wife Kathy and their son Andrew have been enjoying the holiday weekend at their Aquinnah home. Dr. Kendrick is a cardiologist at Emerson Hospital in Concord and an alumnus of Tufts Medical School of the same era of my seven-year career at Tufts-New England Medical Center. We enjoyed reminiscing about the staff and Posner Hall and other challenges in and around the hospital campus. On Friday afternoon, Andrew caught a 38-pound striped bass that he shared with many of his Lobsterville neighbors on Friday evening.
Dr. Richard Mulligan is at his Lobsterville Road home for another summer season, accompanied by his daughter Jessica. He is a geneticist who performs research at Harvard Medical School. We discussed those of greatest importance at the medical school as well. Jessica has recently returned from an around the world tour with most of her time spent in Asia. She is looking forward to spending her summer at Lobsterville.
Jonathan Perry also attended the Mashpee Pow Wow over the weekend and won as head male dancer. Jonathan is also an interpreter at Plimoth, a presenter at the Aquinnah Cultural Center and serves on the center board.
Robert Rosenberg, his friend Mary Wolfson, his brother Don and his friend Kathy were all at Bob’s home overlooking Menemsha Pond for a holiday weekend of fun. They all enjoyed the social scene at Lobsterville over the weekend.
Arlen Roth and his wife Maria are at their Old South Road home. Arlen entered five of his antique automobiles in the Old South Road Fourth of July parade. He is very excited about the recent gift of a leather-covered guitar which has his name carefully inscribed in the leather. His daughter Lexie has been on the road performing with her new album, One Long Blink. After a brief visit with Arlen and Maria on Sunday morning for coffee, I am now the fortunate recipient of an autographed copy of his latest CD, titled Toolin Around Woodstock. This album also features Levon Helm and Lexie Roth and is on the Aquinnah Records label.
Dr. Gerald Steinberg, his wife Peggy, and their daughter Molly are at their Lobsterville home for the summer season.
Honorary Lobsterville Beach Residents Todd and Mimi Trimmer and their children Matthew, Lilly and Jackson are enjoying their new 25 foot Grady-White cruising around the waters of Vineyard Sound. We are trying to move the family closer to Lobsterville to be near all their friends.
A dear friend from long ago, Dilly – also known as Thomas Walsh — has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Years ago Dilly was a fun part of the Vineyard scene when he worked at the Rare Duck, the Colonial Inn and other hot spots around the Vineyard. In recent years he had chosen Chilmark as his year-round home for his early retirement.
On Thursday, July 17, Dilly and his family will be opening their home for a grand fundraiser for Compassionate Care. Dilly met Ron Hoffman, the founder of Compassionate Care ALS, a group whose mission is not to cure ALS but to assist victims of this disease and to negotiate the maze of things they must do just to get through each day.
Dilly feels as though he is “one of the lucky ones” and wishes to share for the comfort of those less fortunate. Dilly, his wife Barbara and their children Kara, Marisa and Dylan decided on holding a fundraiser at their home on Middle Road in Chilmark. The evening fundraiser is to raise funds for so many others with this disease and to assist them in any way possible, i.e. a wheel chair, home medical equipment, personal computers, or unfunded nursing care.
The evening will begin with music by Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish with hors d’oeuvres catered by the Oyster Bar & Grill served from 5 to 7 p.m. and an open bar for $100. Those wishing to arrive at 8 p.m. are asked to donate $50 for the fund. There will be a silent auction as well as a live auction between 5 and 8 p.m.
Some of the items already donated include a signed John Wightman photograph, fishing trips with some of the top up-Island charter captains, MTV Music Video Awards Show tickets, Patriots game tickets, Celtics tickets, Red Sox/Yankee game tickets, Boston Symphony Tickets, jewelry, and many other items. Thanks to Dilly for once again thinking of those less fortunate and finding a way to fund their wishes as he has definitely kept a positive attitude and is trying to keep ahead of the ALS.
John Wightman will have an opening reception on Saturday, July 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard Beetlebung Corner branch. This year’s show will feature new releases for 2008, including many giclée photographs printed on watercolor archival paper, several black and white conversions on watercolor, and images incorporating wampum and sea glass into the matting. The show will also feature a new limited edition fine artgiclée photograph on watercolor paper of the Clay Cliffs of Aquinnah. Th is image incorporates in the mat a very special clay bead made by Gladys Widdiss. Gladys has signed each limited edition below the clay bead.
This week at the Aquinnah Cultural Center featured a scavenger hunt by Elizabeth Perry on Wednesday. Elizabeth will demonstrate a traditional woven eel trap today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday, July 12 there will be an All Native Artisans Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., an opportunity to view and purchase art from Native artisans across New England. There will also be demonstrations throughout the day. On Wednesday, July 16, Elizabeth Perry will exhibit her new woven eel trap. On Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, Jonathan Perry will demonstrate the technique of making a Muhshoon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Our thoughts have turned to Ann Nelson and her family at the Bunch of Grapes and to Austin and Katrina at Café Moxie and the tragedy at their businesses. Just a week ago I was sitting on that bench in front of their establishments with Garth and Ollie Edwards as we met up with and were greeted by Chief John Cashin while we were down-Island. They will have the support of the Vineyard community as they rebu ild. Many have already called to offer their assistance. They will arise like the phoenix.
Happy birthday wishes this week to Skyler Cameron who will be 10 years old today. He shares the day with Curtis Maciel. Chelsea Hobbs will party on July 12. Dr. W. Richard Claytor will party on July 13.
My favorite publisher in the world, Richard Reston, will party on July 14. Rumor has it that he and Jody are at their Edgartown home for the week but no sightings of them yet!
John O. Vanderhoop will party on July 15 and shares the day with Tobias Vanderhoop, Sonny Sylvia and Misha Vandal. Evangeline Sanfilippo will party on July 16 and shares the day with Otis Burt. Dr. Gerald Steinberg will celebrate a milestone on July 17.
