The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection will hold a public hearing in Boston next week on the town of Tisbury’s home rule petition to license the sale of beer and wine. The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. in room B1 at the State House.

The public is welcome to attend and offer testimony. Cape and Islands Rep. Eric T. Turkington suggests that people interested in speaking contact the committee in advance at 617-722-2030.

The pending legislation would allow the town of Tisbury to devise its own beer and wine laws, which would be more restrictive than state liquor laws. The sale of wine and malt beverages would be restricted to restaurants with a minimum of 30 seats, only to be served with meals at dining tables.

If the legislature approves the home rule petition, it will eventually return to Tisbury voters for final action in the ballot box. Before then, the town will develop more detailed regulations and guidelines.

A public hearing to discuss the proposed beer and wine regulations will be held on Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven.
