Freetown voters overwhelming voiced opposition to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) building a casino in their town at a special town election Tuesday night.

The vote was 954 against and 308 in favor of the tribe building a Class III casino. A total of 1,262 voters turned out to the polls, about 22 per cent voter turnout,Freetown assistant town clerk Diane Souza said. She said the annual town election in April saw 15 per cent voter turnout.

The vote was a non-binding referendum intended to weigh voter opinion. The tribe announced plans last week to build a $167 million resort casino bordering the towns of Lakeville and Freetown. Lakeville voters take to the polls next week.
