The Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s Web site Laura Jernegan: Girl on a Whaleship (girlonawhaleship.org) has won prestigious awards from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH).

The AASLH Leadership in History Awards recognize achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

The Laura Jernegan Web site received a merit award as well as a 2011 WOW Award, given for work that is highly inspirational, exhibits exceptional scholarship, and is exceedingly entrepreneurial. Only three WOW Awards were given this year.

The interactive Web site, full of information on the history and culture of whaling, was launched in August, 2010. It was created with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through its We the People program, which fosters the teaching, study and understanding of American history, culture and democratic principles.

The awards were presented in Richmond, Va., on Friday, Sept. 16.
