Vineyarders’ experiences of World War II both at home and overseas are collected in a new book from the Martha’s Vineyard Museum based on its recent exhibition Those Who Serve: Martha’s Vineyard and World War II,

Narratives from interviews with 19 Vineyarders, along with contemporary and archival photographs, are brought together by oral historian Linsey Lee in this book.

The stories include: the late Jim McLaurin describing his service in the European theatre as a member of the famed, all-black Tuskegee Airmen; Anne Lesnikowski detailing the day she earned her wings with the WASPS; Hector Asselin explaining the positive and negative aspects of service at Naval Air Station Martha’s Vineyard; Ted Morgan’s account of parachuting behind enemy lines at Normandy and serving in six horrific battle campaigns as a medic; and Maurice and Nettie Vanderpol’s description of surviving the war in hiding in Holland and internment in a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia.
