The boathouse at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Menemsha has burned to the ground and the West Dock continues to burn as firefighters from around the Island struggle to contain a fire that broke out at 2:40 p.m. on Monday. Menemsha has been evacuated, all roads leading to the village have been closed and the harbor has been evacuated and closed to boat traffic. Lifeguards have evacuated Menemsha Beach and the sky is filled with smoke and burning ash. A command center has been set up at the Home Port Restaurant and firefighters are being shuttled in and out amid conditions of extreme heat. The fire was first reported at 2:40 p.m. and at 4 pm. was still fully engaged.

There are no reports of injuries, according to a statement put out by the Coast Guard just after 4 p.m. There are 22 crew members assigned to the station, the statement said. The station’s 47-foot cutter evacuated the pier just before it became engulfed in flames.
