Fourth of July Fire Destroys Café Moxie, Closes Main Street Vineyard Haven
By MIKE SECCOMBE
A Fourth of July morning fire destroyed Café Moxie restaurant and severely damaged the Bunch of Grapes bookstore in Main Street Vineyard Haven.
The blaze, the biggest on the Island in years, is believed to have started in the basement of the café shortly after 9 a.m.
Owner Austin Racine was the only person in the café at the time. He said he was in the kitchen when he noticed smoke. He had earlier been in the basement, which is used for storage.
“I had been working down there all morning and didn’t notice anything,” he said.
The flames quickly engulfed the small, single-story wooden building, and spread to the two-story book store, with which it had a common wall.

Café Moxie fire Friday morning.
Within 30 minutes, the café was gutted, the windows blown out and roof beginning to collapse.
Flames erupted through the roof of the café, and burned through the side of the bookstore. It took close to half an hour before fire fighters were able to get a hose pouring water into the burning roof of the cafe and through the burning side of Bunch of Grapes.
Hundreds of onlookers on Main street watched as firefighters from Tisbury, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown struggled to get enough water to the burning roof.
A hose and ladder truck made repeated attempts to get a water through a second story front window of the Bunch of Grapes but failed. A second attempt to get over the roof also was unsuccessful and thick smoke forced them back.
But firemen continued to pour water onto the upper parts of the buildings from the front, on Main street, and from the Centre street side. The roof fire was finally contained when another ladder truck on Centre street was also able to get above the roof and pour fire retardant foam onto the building.
A makeshift EMT station was set up on ground behind the Capawock Theatre, and several firemen were treated for smoke inhalation and dehydration.
Power was turned off to all of Main street and the stopped clock in front of Bunch of Grapes recording the time: 9:57.
Mr Racine and his partner Katrina Yekel just bought the business in May.
Former owner Tina Miller, who opened it as Moxie in 1998 and sold it in 2001, was on the scene shortly after the fire started.
“All of a sudden you saw fire come out from under the floor, right up to the windows, and the windows just break. It was so fast and so fierce,” she said, adding:
“If this had happened at four in the morning, the whole street could have gone.”
Tisbury selectman Jeff Kristal said he believed Mr. Racine had tried to fight the fire himself.
“Austin was in the building and tried to put it out. Mr. [Robert] Clark, next door at Mardell’s, saw it and sounded the alarm and went and got the fire truck.
“He was pretty huge in containing it,” Mr. Kristal said.
He said the town would now have to band together to help the owners of the businesses.
“These structures are gone; they’re going to have to be rebuilt. At least Moxie will. That’s a pretty vital corner of the town. The bookstore is an anchor.”
Although the fire closed down most of Main street, Steamship Authority ferry service continued to operate normally out of Vineyard Haven.
The Gazette will continue to post updates on the fire on this Web site throughout the day.

My heart goes out to the owners of Bunch of Grapes and Cafe Moxie. I couldn't believe what I was reading.
I've spent countless hours in Bunch of Grapes over the course of many years and it was always one of my first stops on my trips back to the Vineyard.
I remember when the Cafe Moxie part of the building was a barber shop.

Ithink a great idea would be for the Bunch of Grapes to re-open fast in the old Murray's across the street- setting up book shelves and getting books back in stock could be done very fast- a good restart- I know all the records may or may not be gone- but shelves and books can be replaced and all lives are ok.

Owner Austin Racine is my cousin and my heart goes out to him and Katrina. He has worked so hard on making his dream become a reality. And if anyone has the heart to rebuild Cafe Moxie he most certainly does. What a tragety to watch your dream go up in flames. But I have complete faith that he will be up and running again before long. This is his passion! Thank God he was able to get out, and nobody was injured. Things can be rebuilt. And I hope that the residents of Vineyard Haven will support him in his effort to continue his dream and provide an excellent place for food and fellowship. Many Prayers and Love to Austin and Katrina.

How tragically sad is this ? The venerable Bunch of Grapes and a cornerstone quality eatery Cafe Moxie severely damaged by fire....and on the Fourth of July no less ! While the structural damages are astounding, I am just grateful that there were no serious injuries or loss of life.
A reminder to all, regarding a particular gem or stone. Diamonds originate from coal, and the metamorphosis and result of pieces of compressed carbon into translucent beauty...are gleaming, inspiring and precious. The settings for the new stones are in place on Main Street, ready to welcome and accept the new gems, when they are ready, once again.

My heart goes out to my sister Katrina and to Austin. I'm glad that I was able to experience Moxie before this unfortunate tragedy happened. I know that the two of them are strong and very determined to make their dreams come true, and without a doubt they will make a strong come back.

Another piece of Vineyard Haven history is gone or soon to be gone with demolition of what's left from this horrible fire. I hope that all parties can recover from this disaster and rebuild on that same site. The location held a lot of memories for me begining with the First National gocery store located where the Bunch of Grapes is and that my cousin Ed Lopes managed and my Uncle Frank Lopes worked as a grocery manager also. Prior to a number of restaurants locating where the Moxie is my god parents Paul and Mary Trahan had their Candy Kitchen at this location for over 20 years. Good luck on the rebuilding I look forward to seeing the location renewed.

Tower One and building cost paid in full!!! How much would it have cost to replace at least half the town. After years on the Oak Bluffs fire dept. I can tell you did a great job.Firefighting equipment is only as good as it's men that run it,and a hat-tip to John Schilling on the great job of coordinating the work of all departments during and after the fire. I feel this was a fire that potentially with no access to the back of buildings and houses, close-by and up hill could have been an inferno, again great job to all.

First of all, cudos, applause, and hugs of gratitude to those who fought the fire and all those who supported them on that sad day. I am just amazed at what you accomplished in very difficult circumstances.
My sadness for those who worked for and cared about Cafe Moxie - what can we do to help rebuild?
Finally, Bunch of Grapes is a treasured island and national resource. It is the best bookstore I know of. How about making it like Community Supported Agriculture, so that those of us who love it buy "shares" to support the rebuilding. You could throw a party for the shareholders when it reopens. We could also volunteer to help clean out and restock. Just let us know - this bookstore is worth saving.

We were devastated to hear of the fire and loss of the venerable Bunch of Grapes bookstore. Just a week or so ago, we featured the store, with a photo, in a blog on Martha's Vineyard as a literary destination. See it here: http://alanrinzler.com/blog/2008/06/22/literary-destination-marthas-vineyard/
We hope fervently that this cherished spot is able to re-open and rebuild as soon as possible.
